This article explores how cause lawyers in Myanmar advocate for the formal application of law as a means to achieve transformative justice and build a broader societal constituency around legal principles. By insisting on legal formality and public accountability, these lawyers challenge the state’s monopoly on power and promote the idea of law as a space where citizens can assert interests independent of the government. However, the article also highlights the persistent problem of impunity, where those in power frequently ignore the law, undermining public trust and complicating efforts to make the legal system truly serve the people.
