On April 25, 2025, 777 solo and small firm lawyers from across the U.S. filed an amicus brief in support of Susman Godfrey LLP’s lawsuit challenging a recent Executive Order issued by President Trump. The order targets the firm for representing politically disfavored clients and threatens to strip lawyers of access to federal buildings, agency personnel, and security clearances.
The brief warns that such executive overreach endangers constitutional rights, including the right to counsel, and disproportionately harms solo and small firm practitioners who serve vulnerable populations. It argues the order undermines ethical norms, enables political retaliation against attorneys, and violates the separation of powers by creating new law without Congressional approval.
The amici urge the court to declare the order unconstitutional and protect the integrity of the legal profession and access to justice for all.
