Biography
Ethan Michelson is a sociologist specializing in law and society in China. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in sociology from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in East Asian studies and sociology from McGill University. Currently Academic Director of the IU China Gateway, his research on Chinese lawyers and social conflict has appeared in top journals across disciplines.
His recent book, Decoupling: Gender Injustice in China’s Divorce Courts (Cambridge, 2022), analyzes nearly 150,000 divorce trials and uncovers systemic violations of gender and legal rights. His work has been supported by institutions including the Ford Foundation, NSF, and Fulbright-Hays.
