Sida Liu is Professor of Law at the University of Hong Kong, with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Sociology. A leading scholar in the sociology of law, his research explores Chinese law and society, criminal justice, legal professions, and sociolegal theory. He has conducted extensive empirical work on China’s legal reforms and authored four books, including Criminal Defense in China and The Asian Law and Society Reader. His scholarship appears in top law and social science journals. Professor Liu also holds affiliations with institutions such as the American Bar Foundation, Harvard Law School, and NYU’s U.S.-Asia Law Institute. He previously taught at the University of Toronto and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and holds an LLB from Peking University and a PhD in sociology from the University of Chicago.
