Eve Darian-Smith is Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Global and International Studies at the University of California, Irvine, with affiliated appointments in the Law School, Anthropology, and Criminology, Law & Society. A lawyer, historian, and anthropologist by training, her interdisciplinary research explores authoritarianism, crises of democracy, global and international law, and the political dimensions of higher education. She is the author of numerous award-winning books, including Global Burning: Rising Antidemocracy and the Climate Crisis and Laws and Societies in Global Contexts. Her latest book, Policing Higher Education (Johns Hopkins UP, 2025), examines the far-right assault on academic freedom. Darian-Smith co-edits the Global and Insurgent Legalities book series (Duke UP) and serves in multiple leadership roles within the Law & Society Association. She is a dedicated teacher and mentor, and has received wide recognition for her scholarship and service.
