With support from former Supreme Court presidents, scholars and former officials launch manifesto for democracy

More than 600 lawyers, scholars and former officials signed a manifesto launched at the University of São Paulo Law School on October 21, ahead of Brazil’s October 25 presidential runoff, CartaCapital reports. Organized by the human rights group Comissão Arns and the law students’ association Centro Acadêmico XI de Agosto, it counts former Supreme Court presidents Celso de Mello, Cezar Peluso and Rosa Weber among its signatories. It defends the Constitution and the independence of the three branches and urges support for a candidate who respects democratic institutions, without naming one. The organizers call it nonpartisan. The report is in Portuguese.
