A coalition of international legal and human rights organizations has condemned escalating attacks by Turkish authorities on the Istanbul Bar Association and the broader legal profession. Following the forced removal of the Bar’s elected leadership and criminal charges against its president and board members, including arbitrary detentions and judicial harassment, concerns are mounting over the erosion of legal independence and fair trial guarantees in Türkiye. The crackdown, which intensified after protests over the arrest of Istanbul’s mayor, has seen lawyers obstructed, arrested, and criminalized for defending human rights. The signatories call for the immediate cessation of all legal proceedings, the release of detained lawyers, and urgent international action to defend the rule of law in Türkiye.
