Ugandan opposition seeks to nullify law on military prosecution of civilians – The National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s main opposition party, filed a constitutional court case to strike down a new law allowing military tribunals to try civilians, which President Yoweri Museveni signed earlier this year. Uganda’s Supreme Court had banned such military trials in January, but the government reinstated them, a move critics say is used to persecute political opponents under the guise of security. Many NUP members – including leader Bobi Wine – have previously been charged in military courts, and the opposition argues the law was rushed through without proper consultation to entrench Museveni’s decades-long rule.
