Human rights lawyer couple sentenced to 10 years in prison in Pakistan

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court has sentenced the human rights lawyers Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali Chattha, to 10 years in prison each and a fine, BBC News reports. The charges stem from an October 2024 incident in Islamabad in which prosecutors say the couple removed road barriers on a route reserved for the England cricket team’s security convoy and obstructed police. The couple deny the charges. Amnesty International says they were denied an open and fair trial, objecting that hearings were moved inside the prison. Both lawyers have been in custody since January 23, when they were arrested in a separate case. The next day, they were sentenced over social media posts criticizing the military. The Supreme Court suspended those sentences and granted bail in September, but police re-arrested them the same day in another case.
