CLA Statement in support of the Supreme Court Bar Association of India and concern over the treatment of lawyers in New Delhi
The Commonwealth Lawyers Association expresses solidarity with the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association over the treatment of lawyers in New Delhi. It reports that around 50 to 60 lawyers were detained near the Supreme Court during a protest on October 10, and that lawyers who tried to represent other detainees were denied access, with some assaulted and detained themselves. At a special sitting on October 11, the Supreme Court directed that unarmed citizens not be unlawfully detained and that lawyers and journalists not be obstructed in their work. The association urges the Indian government and police to follow those directions and to open an independent investigation into alleged police abuse.
