The Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD) announced on August 21 that it will file criminal complaints against prison administrators and guards after its members documented evidence of physical abuse during visits to detainees in Antalya. The association says prisoners were beaten on August 13 after objecting to a routine count order, dragged along the ground, and beaten again elsewhere in the facility; its lawyers recorded visible injuries and say the prisoners were denied access to their own medical reports. It also documented a sixteen-year-old held in isolation at a Kayseri juvenile facility with fifteen minutes of daily exercise and lights on continuously, and three detainees held in a rat-infested area in Konya without adequate clean water. Those affected were among the journalists, lawyers, academics, students, and activists swept up in coordinated raids across at least eighteen provinces on July 5, ahead of the July NATO summit in Ankara.
