Uganda’s Directorate of Public Prosecutions is seeking criminal contempt charges against Eron Kiiza, a lawyer on the defence team for opposition figure Kizza Besigye and co-accused Obeid Lutale, over posts he made on social media, the Daily Monitor reported on August 6, 2026. The State is asking the court to find Kiiza guilty of criminal contempt and either commit him to civil prison or, failing that, impose a punitive fine. Kiiza is already a familiar figure in Uganda’s contempt-of-court disputes: he was convicted of contempt by the General Court Martial in January 2025 and sentenced to nine months in prison, and has since pursued a habeas corpus application before the High Court’s Civil Division seeking release, as well as a separate fight over the withholding of his passport.
