Sitting Federal Judges Break Their Silence on Attacks Against the Judiciary at Speak Up for Justice Forum
On March 19, sitting federal judges convened an extraordinary public forum organized by the group Speak Up for Justice, during which they read aloud profane and violent threats they had personally received — including voicemails threatening to “put a bullet in your head” — as part of a coordinated effort to document and condemn the escalating targeting of the judiciary. U.S. Marshals Service data shows that serious threats to federal judges doubled between 2021 and 2024, with 162 judges threatened during a single period of heightened judicial-executive conflict in early 2025. Several judges described swatting attacks and menacing pizza deliveries left at their homes in a slain judge’s son’s name — a pattern now documented in at least seven states. Forum organizers and participating judges argued that the intimidation campaign is inseparable from political rhetoric labeling judges as partisan opponents of the executive branch. “When the third branch of government is intimidated or silenced, the rule of law is at risk,” said the founder of Speak Up for Justice.
